Transformation Stories from Everyday Champs
When they started Boxout, most of these people had a life challenge beyond just fitness. They used boxing and self defence to not only change their bodies, but their lives.
Take a look at their Video Power Stories.

Everyone has a plan...until they get hit
It was all going pretty well there for a while.
I’d turned my back on a law degree to become an author and movie stuntman – working alongside Hollywood stars including Billy Zane from Titanic and Tom Berrenger from Platoon.
I was a guest on morning TV (The Today Show) and met with book agents in the US.
Next stop Oprah.
But then I got hit.
No, it wasn’t Oprah standing me up.
The first was physical, and perhaps an omen for the second. Competing for the bare-knuckle national martial arts title, I was hit with a knee to my head. I was out cold before I hit the floor.
The second hit was worse. Physical wounds bruise the surface and heal, but emotional cuts go deep, and last. I lost my mother to a stroke, then life spiralled out of control. Negative emotions multiplied. I hit rock bottom, and didn’t bounce. My body turned to flab and couldn’t punch the skin off a rice pudding. But the real problem was my mind. I was on a self sabotage mission to hell, and felt powerless to stop it.
I used to think anxiety and depression were signs of weakness. I had no clue the hardest fight of my life would be with myself. Everyone has a plan, until they get hit. The only way out is through.
You’re Stronger Than You Think
My martial arts journey started in my early twenties. Here’s how: I was working as a driver in a ski village in Switzerland. In the last week of the season, wondering what to do with my life, I saw a movie in the tiny village cinema – that changed my life.
So was it a deep, philosophical film about the meaning of life?
Not exactly. It was the thrill-a-minute action movie Die Hard. While it didn’t teach me much about life, I did learn I wanted to be one of those credits at the end of the movie – stuntman.
Couldn’t be too hard - just fall off a building yelling AAAH.. right?
Wrong. I soon learned I needed specific skills, and a lot of them – ones you don’t usually include on a job resume. For example, falls fire and fights.
Don’t try this at home
In the movie, Sniper, with Tom Berrenger and Billy Zane
I trained in multiple styles – karate, tae-kwon-do, muy thai, jiu jitsu and boxing, while working in film and TV action scenes for five years. I earned a blackbelt under mentor, Kim Macrae. Long after I retired from films, boxing and martial arts have stayed in my life.
Authentic boxing training is more than just throwing a few punches, or some trendy cardio workout. While the goal for most is fitness, boxing is also about technique, focus and fighting spirit.
My desire to learn and share this knowledge continues to shape my life.
I joined an International Pro Boxing Team under super coach Mark Pitts, and we trained and supported pro boxers for dozens of bouts including two world titles.
One was Olympian Sakio ‘Scorpion’ Bika, who became WBC World
Middleweight Champ and won the reality show, Contender.

I trained in the incredible Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles with legendary trainer Freddie Roach, and his many greats including
superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquaio.
Freddie has a sign above the ring to remind all who enter his gym:
IT AIN’T EASY.
It’s true in boxing, and it’s true in life.
With Sakio in Sydney
Nothing gets you fitter faster than boxing.
Long after retiring from films, boxing and martial arts have stayed in my life from running authentic fitness boxing classes and courses.
Where Boxout was born
Boxout was born the day I rented an old Rocky style studio with a boxing ring, yellowing fight posters and decades of sweat in the air.
My girlfriend thought I was nuts. She said people, especially women, would never come to a gritty boxing gym for a fitness workout. Women want carpet and air-con!
She was right about most things, but not that. That first studio was a success. I taught classes in that dusty gym every week for 18 years. 70% of my students were female. When they started, most had never thrown a punch in their life. They became my inner circle.
The art of the punch
What inspires me are their success stories - in fitness and life.
Tania used boxing to help her lose 20 kilos (50 pounds), and says she “finds peace through boxing.” Angela drew on mental strength from boxing to help end an abusive relationship.
Ioni has 3 kids, can’t get to the gym, so she gloves up and trains at home on her punching bag. Her kids and husband join her too.
Vachi used boxing as the spark to restart exercising after “25 years on the sofa”, while Felicity’s fighting spirit and endurance built through years of hard rounds of boxing helped her rebound from a break up, find new love and start a family.

Punch by punch, round by round, boxing can turn sloth into strength, anxiety into action, procrastination into results. We can transform ourselves with boxing. Any age, anywhere, any time.
Boxing is not all about aggression

Anyone can box..
In boxing you need to focus, which means you don’t think about “exercising”. There is an art to a punch. Technique is everything. When the body and mind combine to deliver a perfect punch to a bag or pad, the energy, power and focus can surprise you.
Bridie says boxing gets her out of her head and into her body. Throwing a good punch requires every part of your body – from the feet, to the legs, core then shoulders and arms.
When all those muscles combine together with your intention and purpose, and you dig deep for one more punch, one more round, one more workout - you know how strong you really are.
In your corner,
Ps - you’re stronger than you think
