How to Be Assertive and Speak Up
What is Assertiveness?
Assertiveness is standing up for your rights without infringing on those of others. It’s not about being aggressive, and it’s not about being passive either. It’s the strong, graceful road between the two Like a sport, to become assertive requires practice.
Practice standing up for yourself on the little things. You don’t have to be an over complaining bore, but if you practice standing up for yourself on little things, (eg: sending back a cold coffee), you’ll be more prepared to stand up for more important things , (eg: refusing to get into a car or taxi when you have a bad feeling about the driver.)
The power of NO
It is often said Sorry is the hardest word to say. But for many, No is even more difficult. One of the reasons for this is that people want to be liked and accepted, even if it means going against their instincts or better judgement.
Sometimes we need to say No – to preserve our security.. or sanity. No is not always a negative word. Saying No can be your best self-defence strategy. When we have the courage to say it, the effect on our lives can be positive, as it allows us to say Yes to what really matters.
